Full disclosure: I am related to Henry Plummer. I grew up knowing about this legend and thought, like most people, he did what he was accused. I went to Montana and saw the ghost town of Bannack and saw accounts there. I noticed that not a single one was consistent with another. One even had Henry a satanist. Henry knew the Bible better than most and had read it front to back no less than seven times by the time he was a teenager.I have come to believe he is innocent of the crimes. Each time he killed someone, that person was trying to harm or kill Henry. He killed in self-defense. He was an anti-slavery Northern Democrat and I have since found out the leader of the Vigilance Committee was a very politically astute republican. The vigilante leader also benefitted from the executions, he took the deads property and even took Henry Plummer's gold claim. Henry Plummer partnered with several people in productive mines. All of these miners were executed within three days of each other. He was hung with out a trial and was never able to mount a defense. Even if he was guilty, he deserved at least that.

Talk about a page-turner! Author Linda Buxbaum brilliantly begins "The Life and Times of Henry Plummer" with a chapter titled "The End". Within paragraphs, she creates his situation with an immediacy a reader can't help but be swept into. And her writing style! Immediate, accessible, and eloquent. Horses with "long eyelashes icicled", for example, instead of plain old cold. The rest of the story starts with the second chapter. Again, author Buxbaum plunges the reader into what will clearly be a "life and times" well worth discovering. To say more would be to give too much away. Just read it.

When did Amazon start forcing readers to give reviews for free? Sounds like a class action lawsuit needs to be filed.

It seems that the author feels that the crimes Plummer committed were never his fault and despite his murders, he was a good guy.
